Solving a branding problem

When founder Rodney Smith Jr. asked us to overhaul the organization’s WordPress website, our first conversation turned up a bigger issue: the name.

While out serving communities, Rodney heard feedback that the original brand, “We Are Raising Men Lawn Care,” felt exclusive. Young women were welcome, and encouraged, to take part in the organization’s community service program, the 50 Yard Challenge, but the brand didn’t show it.

Branding for inclusion

The fix was simple. We adjusted the logo layout and added a few words. “We Are Raising Men & Women Lawn Care Service” is a long name, but it says who the organization is for.

The nonprofit teaches young people the values of service, leadership and community, and its logo and brand assets now reflect that. We delivered a finished brand guide with the new assets.

The mission

The organization provides free lawn care to elderly people, people with disabilities, single mothers and veterans who don’t have the time, resources or money to take care of their yards. It had already drawn national attention for its founder and its mission.

Work sized to the organization

Rodney ran the organization largely on his own, and his time belonged with the young people he serves, not on website updates and marketing materials. We scoped the website work around what the organization would actually maintain, so more of its funding goes to the mission.

The website

Rodney had already built the site himself in WordPress with the Elementor page builder. What he needed was professional help to organize the content, make the site easier to use, and on-demand support for problems like plugin conflicts or donation receipts that fail to send because of SMTP errors.

Those are problems we fix every day. Within a few weeks, the site was cleaned up and ready for people who want to learn about the mission.

Why this work matters to us

This is the kind of organization we want to help: people making their communities better. Our part is making sure their website works as hard as they do.

Ongoing fixes like these are part of our hosting and care work.
